about

The New Mongrels’ Raised Incorruptible is a new record from a 148-year-old band.

Those familiar with group will know the bizarre history of band member Haynes Brooke and his great-great grandfather Henry.

Deaf in one ear, shell-shocked, a 17-year-old veteran of the civil war, Henry founded the “Smythe County Mongrels Society” in 18661. He stated their purpose as “the joyful promotion, through song and rythmic utterances, of a unified moral code for all creatures.” Apparently the group met to drink hard cider and sing the entire book of Psalms to their own improvised melodies. Dogs and instruments welcome. Great-great grandpa rocked.

Brooke found the charter of the “Mongrels,” as they were called, legally intact in the Smythe County courthouse and brought the group back to life as the New Mongrels.

Today this underground society of musicians, artists and writers still operates under an amended version of the original by-laws, which calls for, among other things, “membership by invitation without regard to species affiliation.” This makes for strange committee meetings but great music.

Raised Incorruptible began in a rented house on the Rogue River in Oregon, when some impromptu mongrel recording sessions yielded promising results. Back in LA, Brooke created a calimitous batch of low-fi demos working with drummer Ken Palmer, house percussionist for Tim Robbin’s Actors Gang Theater. These demos went out to mongrel members across North America for input and review in keeping with the group’s odd collectivist procedures. Field trips to New Hampshire and Canada brought back musical contributions, then Brooke’s garage became the main recording facility and as mongrels passed through LA they were added to the final project. The record was mixed by film composer and mongrel member Kubilay Uner.

Despite the sometimes cumbersome procedural demands of their organization, a dispersed and evolving group of Mongrels built a powerful and unified sound. An ear-catching, mixed-breed blend of styles emerged, anchored always by the unique and lyrically rich songwriting of Brooke. Each cut has its own strong personality; together they have the combined intensity of a pack of wild dogs.

The New Mongrels: 148 years old and still rocking.

Track Name: Time
Time
words and music by Haynes Brooke

Pioneers of the dynamic range
which way do you steer across the concrete plains?
what do you hear? here, nothing remains

easy come, easy go,
it's just time, you can't hold it, it's time
(let go)

make a club with no members but me
lock it up from above and swallow the key
aye, there's the rub, perchance to dream

easy come, easy go,
it's just time, you can't hold it, it's time
(let go)

open up you arrow people
gravity's got nothing on you
roll back a couple of thousand years
see what you can undo

spiral down and leave it alone
I got a pile of space around my elegant bones
I'm keeping up, how, nobody knows

easy come, easy go,
it's just time, you can't hold it, it's time

come on, let go
Track Name: Love it Madly
LOVE IT MADLY

you got to do it proudly
you got to say it loudly
hear it gladly. love it madly
all the time you can. anytime you can.

the word has always been there.
designed to let us in there.
now the spirit brings us near it
evermore and still our lives to fill

you say you can't be certain
what lies behind the curtain
what are you certain of? does it fill you with love?
have you let your mind leave your self behind?

maybe ask your mind:
can I leave my self behind?
Track Name: Raised Incorruptible
RAISED INCORRUPTIBLE

Where you raised incorruptible?
Where you raised to know the amazing love of the Lord,
and did you go

down to the river, where you walked in?
And did you know, down by the river,
when you walked out again

you shall be raised incorruptible
when he comes, when he comes, when he comes?

Did you hear in a lonely place, on a boat out on the sea
where you said, yeah, I’ll take a chance,
if you’ll come with me

down to the river, where you walked in?
And did you know, down by the river,
when you walked out again

we shall be raised incorruptible
when he comes, when he comes? When he comes

will you go down to the river? And will you walk in?

And will you know, down by the river, when you walk out again,

I shall be raised incorruptible?
Track Name: Gentle
GENTLE

hey, I’m losing my way
took a little journey and got lost along the way
down in the black

now I'm looking over my shoulder
something's on my back
please be gentle with me

hey, I'm losing my way
there's the sky but where's the ground
I know I"m lost but look at all I found

when did dreams become illegal?
do I try to tell you what to see?
please be gentle with me

hey, I'm losing my way
guess I won't be playing today

hey blind man, hey blind man
can you tell me what you see
I've got this big black song I cannot write it out of me

hey old man, hey old man,
tell me what your life was for
I've got this big spirit knocking on salvation's door

I will write a song like running water
run by you wash you away
wanderers will wander in the dark sometimes
you know that's just their way

please be gentle with me

hey, I'm losing my way
guess I won't be playing today
Track Name: Decision Time
DECISION TIME

Big George and little Billy C
never did see things like me
and so they won't be flying over, A.C.

gotta get down on your knees
begging everybody pretty please
as if it wasn't obvious what the man needs

Decision Time fell on everyone
like a brotherly smile at the wrong end of a gun

and I think on the inside of my eyelids I saw love.

will you find peace of mind looking for the end of time?

still sitting there on the fence
playing truth or consequence
you lost that game when you put no in your yes.

Decision Time fell on everyone
like a brotherly smile at the wrong end of a gun

Decision Time fell on everyone
like a head on a spine at the wrong end of a gun

I think on the inside of my eyelids I saw love.
love love love love love love love love love
Track Name: Early
EARLY

all that stuff she sent, came and went
she's buying a new house, now she don't mean to boast
but when I pay the rent I thank the Lord
that we can take a little and make the most

we can watch the Braves on TBS
and we can watch the waves breaking off the coast
and we can watch our days rolling down Union Street
we can take a little and make the most

we go walking down in Magnasun Park
watch the evening lie down on the lake
and when I take your hand to say you know we better go
you say, yeah I got to be up early

you are coming home late tonight
I have been alone here with my ghosts
I am not afraid, there's nothing over us
we can take a little and make the most

we go walking down in Magnasun Park
watch the evening lie down on the lake
and when I take your hand to say you know we better go
you say, yeah I got to be up early

take a little and make the most
isn't that the way things always grow
and when I take your hand to say you know we better go
you say, yeah we got to be up early
Track Name: Freedom
FREEEDOM

He came at a time when come rain or come shine
there was shit in the air and in the streets
his shine had an edge that cut through like a saw
when the rain came down in cacophonous sheets

freedom is what I chose
what I chose what I chose
what I chose is freedom
freedom is what I chose

Thor had a voice all his own -- it was choice
like a bell when its ringing repeats
At times when he was right the man could emanate some light
as his words rolled out into fundamental streets

freedom

it all hit the fan down in afghanistan
when the taliban killed my friend
they riddled his heart, they tore it apart
but under us I can hear its thunderous
I feel under us its thunderous
under us I can feel its thunderous beats

freedom is what I chose
what I chose what I chose
what I chose is freedom
freedom is what I chose
Track Name: Dogs and Kings
DOGS AND KINGS

phone call, blue sky
few birds, few words
let fly

count the cars, count the stars
either way you have to say
those are ours

blue sky turns gray, all the birds flying
I say please baby I'm trying
I'm trying

why do you have to chase those everlasting days?

dusky breeze, poplar trees
I get through a few more hours
thanks to these

flowers bloom, airplanes zoom
petals fall, don't we all
have our wounds

blue sky turns gray, all the birds flying
I say please baby I'm trying
I'm trying

why do you want to chase those everlasting days?

phone rings, what can I say
hate and lust, dogs and kings
all turn to dust
Track Name: Seems
SEEMS
a song for Hamlet

wading through a nation
of bilge water writers
all their indignation thrown up on a screen

half that information digesting inside us

and be is the opposite of seems
seems is the opposite of be

You've become a player
without a definition
and much to your dismay you're not on the team

but there will come a day you're
gonna need your intuition

and be is the opposite of seems
seems is the opposite of be

It's not my long black coat or my black ink mood
or the trap or the kiss or the cold wedding food

I've become an action
that can't locate a function
and can't decide a fraction of all the stuff I dream

and it's time to join the faction
that says no to that distraction

and be is the opposite of seems
seems is the opposite of be
Track Name: Ruination
RUINATION

Ruination
follows me
Cause I touched it once and ever since
it just won't let me be

Rumination
doesn't help
I think more about my thinking than I do
about myself

Occupation
undefined
I'm the last remaining solitary member
of my kind

Expiration
date unknown
I just hope that when it comes
he's coming to take me home

When the time comes take me home
come on, take me home
Track Name: Heal My Heart
HEAL MY HEART

If you're gonna heal my heart,
If you're gonna heal my heart,
If you're gonna heal my heart,
you better start

If you're gonna run away
if you’re gonna run away
if you're gonna run away
just leave today

If you're gonna heal my heart,
If you're gonna heal my heart,
If you're gonna heal my heart,
you better start
Track Name: Palm Point
PALM POINT (Buried Michael)

I found Kevin's Buckle. it's a patented device
I was up on Palm Point looking at the horses down below
all we knew at that point was the timing was eventful 'cause
the world was on the verge of one hell of a good show

Up on Palm Point you can see where they buried Michael
carved out of the mountain by the church of Paul Revere
And she was not his lover and we'll never have another
'Cause no patented device is gonna keep him here...

when the sun descended and our revelries were ended
we made for the horizon, headed home too soon
we will next be talking when the dead rise to go walking
in your favorite direction, backwards toward the moon

Up on Palm Point you can see where they buried Michael...

I saw officers and craftsmen face their darkest fears
when they saw the way they killed that boy in the parking lot at Sears
it sent us dancing all the way to the outskirts of LA
I remember everything just like it was yesterday...

I was just a kid, John B. Cary Elementary
when I saw that teacher fly across the room
people started screaming we were jumping off the desk chairs
listening to Michael tearing up that tune

Up on Palm Point you can see where they buried Michael...

It all came upon me like my personal black Monday
a refrigerated gurney in a cold florescent room
I can see the road before me and the ending might restore me
with a 4/4 minor chord and a reverberating boom, boom, boom

Up on Palm Point you can see where they buried Michael
carved out of the mountain near the church of Paul Revere
And she was not his lover and we'll never have another
'Cause no patented device is gonna keep him here...
Track Name: Two Trees
TWO TREES

so you sit, spin the same song
watch it all roll around until dawn
when you rise to go on with your lives
you will discover I'm gone

poisoned nowhere to go nothing comes from nothing
there's no bravery left in my heart
to save me

all my life, words, words, words picked a path through my day
I don't need all that much to hang on
but I lost it all the day I lost my name

poisoned nowhere to go nothing comes from nothing
there's no bravery left in my heart
to save me

in my dreams, I see a house, two trees, leaning over the eaves
and then voices on the breeze, they say my old friend,
I've been waiting for you calling out your name

now I hear the boys in the hall rolling up their fingers to fight
in an hour a week a year they weren't here, not on this night

poisoned nowhere to go nothing comes from nothing
there's no bravery left in my heart
to save me
